Spooru vs Spond: what to choose for your team
Spond is an app for organising groups and clubs (events, messages and payments) that presents itself as free. Spooru is also free for the club, but focuses on one specific thing: planning the season and training for youth football and basketball, as well as managing the calendar and call-ups.
- Built for
- Spooru: Grassroots amateur sports clubs in Europe.
- Spond: Groups, clubs and teams in any sport or activity.
- Calendar, call-ups and attendance
- Spooru: Shared calendar (subscribable from Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook and importable from Excel, CSV or ICS), call-ups, club events with attendance confirmation and a panel of the families' replies, and line-ups with a tactics board and free drawing.
- Spond: One-off and recurring events, a “season planning” event type, availability polls, invitations and a waiting list.
- Notifications and reminders
- Spooru: Phone notifications and, if they do not arrive, email: an automatic reminder for every match and training with “I'm in / Can't make it” buttons, a nudge to families who have not replied, a reminder for staff to take attendance, and an automatic notice when staff create, change or cancel an event. One notice per player, tournament and day. Each club sets the timings.
- Spond: “Invitations and reminders” and “Notifications” are listed, with no further detail on the page we checked.
- Messaging
- Spooru: Team messaging with four channels (read-only notices, team chat, staff chat and private messages between a family and the coach), an unread badge and a notification for every message.
- Spond: Built-in messaging that states it is GDPR-compliant, with supervision for families and guardians.
- Fees and payments
- Spooru: Built-in, optional payment system: registration fee and monthly fee with sibling pricing, SEPA direct-debit receipts and batches (with an XML file and tracking of collected and returned), card payment with Stripe (to the club's own account or with a weekly payout), a club shop with sizes and stock, and a panel where each family sees its receipts, orders and payments.
- Spond: Payment requests within a group or subgroup (annual fees, trips, kit), by card and digital wallets; it shows a transaction fee on each payment.
