What the template includes

  • Header with team, age group, date, session number, expected and present players, duration, venue and equipment.
  • Main and secondary objective of the session.
  • The five phases of a session — activation, two main parts, transfer to the game and cool-down — with a suggested share of the time.
  • For each phase: activity and set-up, space for a diagram and key coaching points.
  • A closing evaluation block: what worked, what to improve and notes for the next session.

How to use it, step by step

  1. 1Start with the main objective: a single idea you want the players to understand or improve today.
  2. 2Write down the total duration and work out the minutes of each phase from the suggested percentages. In a 75-minute session, for example, the transfer to the game can take between 19 and 30 minutes.
  3. 3Choose activities that go from less to more opposition and finish in real play. Draw the set-up in the diagram and add two or three short coaching points.
  4. 4During practice, note who is missing and anything that catches your eye. You do not need to write much.
  5. 5Afterwards, fill in the evaluation and note what you will carry over to the next session, so each practice builds on the last.

Frequently asked questions

Which age groups is it for?

Any stage of youth soccer, from U7 to U19. The activities and length change (from 45–60 minutes with the youngest to around 90 with the oldest), but the structure of the session is the same.

Can I edit it on the computer?

This version is a PDF to print and fill in by hand. If you would rather create and save your sessions digitally, with the exercise library and the team calendar, you can do it for free in Spooru.

Why do the phases have percentages?

Because how you split the time matters as much as the activities: a session with too much warm-up or no transfer to the game is less effective. They are guide values to balance the session, not strict minutes.
